This restaurant is a gem. Comfort food. Simple decor. Affordable. For those of us who grew up in era of family restaurants this place nails something that hipster hangouts cannot. It is also nestled in the timeless and wonderful Belmont Village. I will be back and recommend this place to others.
Great Food, Great Service and Great prices. My grandparents are moving to a condo near by and we decided to walk around and check out local business’s. We chose The Checkerboard for lunch. It was 2:30 when we came in and sadly realized they closed at 3pm on Mondays so we didn’t get to stay too long. The server was very kind and told us to take our time eating. The menu has some great choices and the prices just can’t be beat. This will be our new place for family lunches and dinners for sure. Food was yummy and great value! I got the Egg, Cheese and Bacon sandwich with buttered mushrooms on the side and a tea. My mom got a BLT with fries and a coffee. Our bill came to around 24 with is amazing for a lunch for 2 with drinks and sides. The portions were also very generous. I’m excited to come back with my grandparents who have fish and chips every Friday! The 1 piece fish and chips was only 9.99 on the menu! Also my daughter’s favourite grilled cheese was under 4. Very excited to try lots of stuff on the menu.

Ive been in the region for several years yet I hadn't heard about this place until a few months ago. Completely forgot about it and then I got reminded about this place. As a result, Went for a Sunday breakfast. The restaurant had a nice ambience and the food quality was good.
The best clubhouse sandwiches. I wish your hours would be open longer perhaps a weekday & Fridays at least til 5 or 5:30! 3pm is way to early if you don't want breakfast.....more brunch into dinner. Thank you.99
Great little restaurant. Kids love the chicken fingers and fries. The western omelet and coffee is not bad either. I hope the checkerboard sticks around. I hate when places like this disappear. What fills their space is never as special or memorable.
Before I had even entered the building, I was already receiving excellent service at Checkerboard. My server eagerly welcomed me at the door and was incredibly friendly, getting me seated and making me feel very at home for my entire experience. The diner's design made me feel like I was visiting family, and my server's attitude reinforced that. Server said goodbye to each individual person who left and welcomed each individual person in, knowing all regulars by name. Made great conversation that made for a warm atmosphere. Server was very confident about his cooking abilities which gave me high hopes for the food, and those hopes were met easily. My pancakes were perfectly crisped on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the flavour was great. After eating, the server made it clear that I was welcome to stay for as long as I'd like and we chatted about the area. Even more, when I walked past the Checkerboard later in the day, I was met with recognition and the same friendly service. After just one trip, I already feel like family and I will absolutely be coming back soon. The best breakfast in Kitchener - don't miss this one.
